After conducting an organizational survey, many organizations tend to undertake development activities to move forward with the results. Such development activities may include various training sessions, workshops, and coaching programs. Through these, it is possible to significantly influence feedback skills, which have recently emerged in many organizations as an area for development. Effective feedback, both giving and receiving, is the cornerstone of successful communication and teamwork in organizations. But how exactly do development activities help enhance feedback skills?

The Importance of Feedback

Feedback is primarily a tool to increase employee motivation, but it also helps them address shortcomings and develop professionally when needed. Regular and constructive feedback helps employees better understand their strengths and areas for development, enabling them to perform more effectively at work. For managers, feedback is also crucial for better guiding their teams toward set goals and preventing the emergence of major problems.

The Role of Development Activities in Enhancing Feedback Skills

Development activities allow participants to acquire the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective feedback giving and receiving. These activities influence the development of feedback skills in several ways:

  • Raising Awareness: Training sessions and workshops help participants understand why feedback is important and what the best practices for giving it are. For example, they help leaders better understand how to provide feedback that is specific, constructive, and solution-oriented while emphasizing the importance of communication style, which in turn helps avoid mistakes such as excessive criticism, vagueness, or making personal comments.
  • Developing Practical Skills: Training sessions offer participants the opportunity to practice giving feedback by simulating situations that reflect real work scenarios. These exercises allow them to learn feedback techniques, such as using “I” messages, active listening, and reflection.
  • Increasing Confidence: Participating in development activities focused on feedback increases both leaders’ and employees’ confidence in giving and receiving feedback. A solid knowledge base and practice reduce the fear of uncomfortable conversations, which in turn fosters an open and honest communication culture within the organization.
  • Raising Cultural Awareness: In international or culturally diverse work environments, it is important to understand how different cultures give and receive feedback. Development activities can help employees and leaders account for cross-cultural differences and adjust their approach accordingly to ensure feedback is effective and comprehensible.

Implementing Development Activities in Daily Work

Effective development activities are reflected in their adaptation to the specific needs of the organization, making it easier to apply their content in daily work. This means that a workshop or training session should include various components, such as a theoretical foundation, group discussions, and the analysis of real-life cases.

It is also important that the development of feedback skills does not only rely on workshops or training sessions. The most critical and crucial step is to implement real practical changes in the organization’s feedback system. This could involve creating new channels for providing feedback, introducing feedback practices in areas where they were previously absent, or simply actively applying the skills learned in one’s work and within the team. The development of feedback skills is an ongoing process that requires repeated practice. Therefore, organizations should systematically approach the development of feedback skills and, if necessary, support their employees in this area.

Conclusion

Development activities play a crucial role in enhancing feedback skills. These activities not only increase the awareness and skills of employees and leaders but also create a conducive environment for open and constructive communication to flourish within the organization. Ultimately, this contributes to creating a positive and supportive work culture where no employee is afraid to receive, ask for, or give feedback. This, in turn, makes it easier to achieve the organization’s broader goals.
